The AI Visibility Check
Find out if ChatGPT, Google's AI answer, and Siri name your business when someone nearby asks for a good pro in your line of work. Most owners are not named, and they have no idea.
Do this first (5 minutes)
Open ChatGPT on your phone. Then open Google. In both, ask the same thing a real customer would ask: "who is a good [your trade] in [your city]." Read the answer and look for your business name.
Most owners find they are not named at all. The AI lists three or four competitors and skips right past them. If that is you, you are not broken and you are not behind for good. You just have not been given a reason to be named yet. This guide is that reason.
Why this matters right now
A lot of people have stopped scrolling through Google. They ask ChatGPT. They read the AI answer that shows up at the top of a Google search. They ask Siri out loud in the truck. What they get back is a short list of names, and they call one of them.
If the AI never says your name, you are invisible to every one of those people. They do not see you, do not click you, do not call you. It is happening quietly. You do not get a notice that you were left off the list. You just get fewer calls and never know why.
How AI decides who to name
The AI is not flipping a coin. It leans on the same handful of things over and over: your Google listing and how complete it is, how many reviews you have and how fresh they are, and whether other local sites mention you by name. It also reads the plain info on your own website.
Here is the part that helps you. Those are the exact same things that help you rank normally on Google. So when you fix them, you help yourself twice. You climb higher on the map, and you start getting named by the AI. One set of fixes, two payoffs.
The self-check
Click each box once you have checked it. Be honest with yourself. Do the searches on your phone the way a customer would.
- Search yourself in ChatGPTAsk "who is a good [your trade] in [your city]." Does your name come up? Try it two or three different ways, because customers ask differently.
- Check Google's AI answerDo the same search in Google. When the AI answer shows up at the top, are you in it, or is it only your competitors?
- Ask for "best [trade] near me"Try the broad version too. This is how a lot of real customers ask. See who gets named and who gets skipped.
- Check your Google listingOpen your Google Business Profile. Is it complete? Category, hours, service area, photos, description, all filled in? Half-empty listings get skipped.
- Compare your review countLook at the businesses that DID get named. How many reviews do they have next to yours? Review count is one of the biggest reasons one gets picked over another.
- Check who mentions youSearch your business name. Do other real local sites talk about you (a chamber page, a local blog, a supplier list)? The AI trusts businesses other sites mention.
What to fix
The list is short, because the things that actually matter are short.
- Get more reviews, and keep them freshAsk every happy customer. The businesses the AI names almost always have more reviews, and more recent ones, than the ones it skips.
- Complete your Google listingFill in every field. Category, service area, hours, photos, a real description. An empty listing tells the AI it does not know enough about you to name you.
- Get mentioned on real local pagesYour chamber, a local news site, a supplier's "where to buy" page, a neighborhood group. Real mentions on real local sites tell the AI you are established here.
- Keep clear, plain info on your own siteSay what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you, in plain words. The AI reads your site, so make it easy to understand.
